Introduction:
Quantitative Literacy through Community-Based Group Projects is an approach to teaching quantitative literacy that incorporates group projects based on campus or local community issues. It was developed during 2004-6 by Drs. Zachariah, Larson and Dewar at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. This approach is intended to help students connect their classroom learning to the "real world" and evaluation data shows that it was successful in achieving this and other learning outcomes. See Chapter 6 in the Course Manual for the evaluation data and analysis. See Read Me below for summaries of the various documents accessible from this website.
This development effort received support from the National Science Foundation through SENCER (Science Education Through New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) and Loyola Marymount University. This course was selected by SENCER for national recognition as an “emerging model.”
Course Manual: The course manual includes all course materials as well substantial background information on the course including an extensive evaluation of the course and its learning outcomes. This would be of interest to individuals teaching quantitative literacy courses, or individuals using groups projects in courses, or individuals designing evaluation plans for courses.
SENCER Emerging Model Document: The SENCER Emerging Model Document contains extensive background information on the course, its audience, why SENCER chose it as an emerging model, and how it was evaluated. This would be of interest to individuals considering applying for SENCER funding or individuals designing evaluation plans for courses.

Left Panel: The left panel provides a link to the official SENCER website, a link that allows an instructor to download the entire course manual in pdf format, and a link to the “SENCER Model Series 2006” on Quantitative Literacy. The left panel also contains links that allow an instructor to download the PowerPoint slides from presentations made at SENCER Summer Institute (SSI) 2006.
