This brass and four other copies
were commissioned by Hamsterley c.
1514-15 and installed in his lifetime; the other four, none of which
survives, were apparently placed in the chapels at
four Oxford colleges--University College, Merton College, Queen's
College, and Durham College (now Trinity College). A text-scroll issues
from near the cadaver's mouth, with the couplet Vermibus hic donor et sic
ostendere conor / Quod sicut hic ponor, ponitur omnis honor ("To
worms I am here given and so try to show / that as I am here set aside, so
is all [worldly] honour set aside.")
