Pukiki, The Portuguese Americans of Hawai'i

In 1876 the Reciprocity Treaty was signed between the Kingdom of Hawaii and United States of America, opening a huge market for Hawaii's Sugar Plantations.

Hawaii needed skilled workers fast and the Portuguese responded. The thousands of Portuguese from the islands of Madeira, Azores and Cape Verde who came to Hawaii between 1878 and 1913 would change Hawaii forever.

Today, the third and forth generation of Portuguese-Hawaiians question their past. With their language lost and their contributions heavily woven into the multi-cultural fabric of Hawaiian culture, some find themselves wondering if they are Portuguese, Hawaiian or American.

Touchstone: The Rock Art of the Coa Valley

A half-hour documentary about the Paleolithic figures discovered along ten miles of the Coa riverbeds in Portugal. Since its discovery in 1995, the site has been considered the most important archeological complex of outdoor engraved Paleolithic rock art in the world.

These animal and human figures represent some of the earliest known attempts by humankind to record and express ideas.

Attracted by the Gold Rush, the Portuguese (mainly from the Azores Islands) found their passage to California as crewmembers aboard American whaling ships and began arriving in the mid-1800s.
