  Quantitative Charging and Discharging

Below you see a circuit composed of a battery, resistor, capacitor and switch.  Initially the capacitor is uncharged and the switch is open (not connected to 1 or 2).

Once the switch is in position 1, the battery, capacitor and resistor are in series.  We can therefore write the voltage equation for this loop:


For now, you'll have to trust me (even though I tell you to not trust me or the book and find the answer for yourself).  The solution to this euqation is:
