  Capacitor Networks- Parallel and Series

What does it mean to be connected in parallel?

  • The components have the same potential difference across them.
  • Each end of the components are connected to each other.
  • There are "branches"

What does it mean to be connected in series?

  • The components do not have the same potential differences.
  • The components are connected end to end, with no branches in between.

Don't get too caught up in how the wires are shaped, it's the way the components are connected that is important.

A 2mF capacitor and a 4mF capacitor are connected in series across an 18V battery.  What is the charge and potential difference for each of the capacitors?
