Physics 201- Introduction to Electricity & Magnetism
October 4- Capacitors

A battery maintains a potential difference across its terminals.

The symbol for a battery:

Let's connect two large plates to the terminals of a battery via a pair of wires.  What happens?  How much charge is on each plate?

What happens if we move the plates?  Does the charge per plate change?

We need a quantity that describes how the system will charge.   The quantity that describes the system's ability to hold charge is its capacitance.  We will see that a capacitor stores energy (you can convert this stored electrical energy to other forms).
