Perhaps the concept most central to all off science is energy.  The combination of energy and matter makes up the universe: matter is substance and energy is what alters the substance.  We tend to think of matter as stuff, things we can see and touch, and energy as something more abstract.  The distinction between matter and energy was removed by Einstein who showed that matter is simply another form of energy. --  E=mc2
