Course Description (principal topics covered):

Overview of political economy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, the history of economic ideas, the economic history of capitalism, and some comparison of capitalism with alternative economic systems. This is a relatively non-technical course which gives a survey of issues and concepts in political economy and economics.

Prerequisites/Recommended Background:

None, except reading, writing, and 'rithmetic.

Required Texts/References:

Bowles and Edwards, Understanding Capitalism, 2nd ed.
plus: photocopied readings on library reserve.


Course Work/Expectations:

several quizzes, one final exam, one term paper.

The term paper concerns current issues of the U.S. political economy, based on articles in newspapers or magazines.

Comments:

This course is not intended for the economics major, but can substitute for Econ. 110 or 120 with permission of the chair of the Economics Department.
