Course No.: FILM 313
Course Title: History of American Film
Prerequisites/Recommended Background: NONE
Course Description (Principal Topics covered):
While the film industry may not have started exclusively in the United States, Hollywood has established many of the filmmaking standards for the rest of the world. The history of American film is the history of an industry that was born, grew up, and continues to mature not in the distant past, but in the first-hand experiences of you, your parents, and your grandparents.
There is no better way to understand, and appreciate, this unique art form than by surveying those American films that were turning points in the development of the art, craft, and business of filmmaking.
From the silent films, which you may enjoy with the rare accompaniment of a live pianist performing an original score, through the golden age of cinema, to the familiar genres that captivate audiences today, this course takes you on a journey through our celluloid past. Lectures, screenings, and readings all enhance your understanding of an art and an industry that is truly stamped "Made in America."
There is a lab fee associated with this course.
