The Day the Teacher Hid in the Corner


In early November, a significant classroom occurrence took place. On this particular day we were discussing whether the square root of 2 plus the square root of 3 is the root of a polynomial. As sometimes happens in a content driven class, however, the students started taking control of solving the problem. In particular, the students were able to take charge of the mathematics, and they became the arbiter of whether the mathematics was correct or not.
