From the beginning of the term, Teri was a quiet student that seldom made suggestions or talked much in class. Mary on the other hand was always one of the students that pushed the class forward by making suggestions and asking questions. I suspect that the project group interaction had little effect on either of these two students. On the other hand, I think the project group interactions may have had an effect on Ellen. Early on in the term, she would make suggestions about what the students might find helpful in getting from me. One important comment that she made was that in other disciplines, prospective teachers would get handouts from their professors that the students might use in their teaching - thus allowing them to start a file of lesson plans or other materials. Ellen wondered if this was possible in math classes. As a result, I tried throughout the term to give the students some handouts. Unfortunately, I was not as successful at this as I would have liked. I probably gave them three such handouts during the term. The idea, however, was a very good one. Later in the term, I think that Ellen was probably less likely to take an active role in the class. Moreover, when I had the students doing group work in the class, I found that she seemed more and more likely to become an observer rather than an active participant.
