The mathematics workshop sequence (MATH 190/191) is a two semester sequence that introduces students to the field of mathematics and has four main components: mathematical problem solving, mathematical writing skills, careers and cultures, and building a mathematical community among the students.

History

The course was developed over 10 years ago by Jackie Dewar, Suzanne Larson, and Thomas Zachariah to attempt to reduce the high attrition rate of students majoring in mathematics. The idea of the course was to teach majors the skills they needed to succeed as math majors, educate them about the job possibilities, and teach them that mathematics is a living growing field.

Teaching

In the past, the course has been taught by the three developers and prior to the year this portfolio discusses, one other faculty member, a self-described "dinosaur." This year represents the first time in 4 years that someone (Curt Bennett) besides Jackie Dewar taught the course, and Curt worked initially from Jackie's notes. In January 2004, Jackie talked about the course and Curt talked about assuming the course at the AMS-MAA Joint Mathematics Meetings.
