The Single Subject Matter Standards (February 2003) of the California Teacher Credential Program require an early field experience (Standard 6) for prospective teachers.
The program provides prospective Single Subject teachers with planned, structured field experiences in departmentalized classrooms beginning as early as possible in the subject matter program. These classroom experiences are linked to program coursework and give a breadth of experiences across grade levels and with diverse populations. The early field experience program is planned collaboratively by subject matter faculty, teacher education faculty and representatives from school districts. The institution cooperates with school districts in selecting schools and classrooms for introductory classroom experiences. The program includes a clear process for documenting each prospective teacher's observations and experience.
The LMU Single Subject Matter Program in Mathematics program (approved Summer 2004) meets this requirement through MATH 293 Field Experience.
The process for completing MATH 293 consists of:
Requirements for MATH 293
Documentation of 20 hours of observation, instruction, tutoring experience, or other school-based observations or activities using the MATH 293 Field Experience Journal Format.
The 20 hours of field work experience must be with students ages 12-18 from diverse populations and in the presence of a teacher certified in mathematics
Complete associated readings and reflective writing assignments given in the MATH 293 course description.
NOTE: This should be completed prior to enrollment
in MATH 493, because you will be referring to your field experience and journal
during MATH 493.
