Putnam Exam

Do you like problem solving?  Do you know the factors of the current  year (2004)?  If so, you might enjoy taking the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition on Saturday, December 4, 2004.  Drs. Bennett and Mellor lead Putnam review sessions on Mondays at 1 and 2 pm.

Department Seminar

Our seminar occurs twice a month on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. in University Hall 2330.  If you would like to present a talk in our seminar, please contact me!   The schedule for this semester is available here.

 Math Club

You don’t have to be a math major to join the math club!  Friends of math majors and folks who just love mathematics are very welcome!  The math club meets every other Thursday during the Convo hour in the mathematics lounge.  For information on the next meeting or upcoming events, such as the student-faculty social in the Bird’s Nest, or the annual student vs. faculty mini-golf tournament, please contact this year’s president:  Erica Scott.

 The Mane Dish (Math Lunch)

Join math students and faculty for lunch on Thursdays during the Convo hour!  Get your lunch down at Roski and then join us in the math department library.  This is a great way to get to know your professors outside of the classroom.  All students of mathematics (not just majors) are encouraged to attend!  Talking about math is optional.

A Piece of the Pi—coming soon!

A Piece of the Pi will be a bi-monthly publication of the LMU Math Department that advertises upcoming events and announcements, introduces math majors and faculty, and offers competitions such as a Problem of the Week and Guess Whose Office!  A Piece of the Pi will be available every other Monday at various locations throughout the department.  If you have suggestions for this newsletter, please contact me.
